A St Clement’s resident, Jane Harrison, and colleagues at Kellogg College, have won £250,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for their exciting East Oxford Community Archaeology Project. It has big pluses for St Clement’s, including the fight to preserve the landscape around Bartlemas Chapel in which Graham Jones, Liberal Democrat City Councillor for the ward, has contributed his professional as well as personal support. On the same day that Britain voted for a revolution in our politics, the electors of St Clement’s Ward increased the Liberal Democrat vote six-fold and sent Graham Jones to the Town Hall to be one of their two councillors. Meanwhile, Peter Sloman, Lib-Dem candidate in St Mary’s, missed winning by just 75 votes. On this basis the Green Party’s only other ward, Iffley Fields, is vunerable too. The Green Party’s East Area monopoly has been cracked and they know they are in trouble. Their parliamentary candidate got only 1,238 votes altogether, 2.4% of the poll. Click here to read more.

Since he was adopted as candidate for St Clement’s Ward, Graham Jones has visited homes in every street. Here are some of the problems he has found – and what he has done about them.

l Organised a petition to the City Council over the disgraceful state of roads and pavements. There is a £24m backlog of repairs in Oxford: evidence of Labour complacency, Tory neglect, and Green Party ineffectiveness.

l Drew up a ten-point plan for a strategic approach to housing in East Oxford – bringing together residents, students, the universities and others, tackling bad landlords, boosting the supply of affordable homes, and improving our quality of life.

l Weighed in with professional evidence over Oriel College’s plans for development at our unique Bartlemas hamlet.

l Got police chief to agree to target rat-running drivers in Rectory Road and Princes Street.

l Successfully asked the East Area Parliament to investigate the dangerous cycle-lanes at the bottom of Headington Hill and the lack of a northbound lane in Marston Road.

l Organised a protest with community leaders in Morrell Avenue, calling for a lights-controlled pedestrian crossing.

l Urged the City Council to halt plans to close much of Manzil Way Gardens for two years in order to provide a builder’s depot, putting pedestrians at risk from reversing vehicles.

l Spoke about their problems with small, family-owned businesses on Cowley Road and St Clement’s Street.

l At a meeting of Oxford School parents concerned over the unpopular Academy plans, urged proper, clear information for all, including those from ethnic minorities.

l Made the City Council aware of problems faced by self-employed taxi-drivers living in the ward.

l Gave support to the East Oxford Low Carbon online community.

l Discussed the needs of East Oxford Community Centre.

l Met volunteers at the Cowley Road resource centres of ‘Mind’, ‘Refugee Welcome’, and the Chinese community’s support team.

Liberal Democrat campaigner for St Clement’s, GRAHAM JONES, wrote to the City Council’s Head of Development, Michael Crofton-Briggs, calling for a rethink over plans to reverse heavy lorries near the Manzil Way health centres and children’s playground. Graham Jones, Lib-Dem campaigner for St Clement’s ward is backing calls for the Cowley Road Carnival to stay on Cowley Road and not just in South Park. ‘It’s a street festival, not just another fun-fair in the park,’ he says. ‘And just imagine what the park will be like if it rains all day!’ Graham enjoyed the fund-raising evening at the James Street Tavern on Saturday and congratulates the organisers for their hard work. ‘We’re backing you,’ he says.
